Puppet Rebellion release new single Cupboards Painted Red

Manchester Indie band Puppet Rebellion will this week release the video for their new single 'Cupboards Painted Red', a narrative of domestic violence told through the eyes of a child. The single, which appeared on the band's second EP 'No Means Yes' (released earlier this year) will be the last release featuring the vocals of Simon Monaghan, following the shock departure of the enigmatic frontman on the eve of a string of nationwide tour dates in August.

The song is based on first-hand experiences Monaghan witnessed as a child growing up in the South Manchester district of Wythenshawe. Guitarist Craig Gibson explains: “As a band we have always wanted to write about real things that affect people. It's not necessarily about being topical or politicised, we're just interested in engaging people in things that matter. In this particular case Simon felt his experience of witnessing domestic abuse as a child was something he wanted to share, so we were happy to build the song around that theme. Obviously we're aware this is a really serious issue that affects people all over the world, so for us it was important the lyrical tone and the power of the composition appealed to the empathy of the listener. Domestic violence doesn’t just happen to women, it happens to men and young people too, and just because something is hard to talk about, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth talking about.”

The video depicts the band performing the song through reflections in shattered glass falling from the top of the screen. Mat O'Brien, whose creative team have previously worked with the likes of chart topper 'Passenger' and 'LadyHawke', conceived the visual effect as a reflection of the lyrical narrative, that would not involve the actual portrayal of violent scenes.

Keen to build on their recent successes, Puppet Rebellion will be heading into the studio with acclaimed producer Gavin Monaghan and new frontman Oliver Davies in November to record their next single due for release in early 2015. Monaghan, (no relation) who approached the band about working together in the summer, has previously worked with a whole host of industry heavyweights with credits including the debut albums of Editors and The Twang.

Puppet Rebellion, who only formed in January of last year have already amassed a significant online following with over 29000 followers on twitter and links with both of Manchester's football clubs, having had one of their tracks featured on the half time set list at Old Trafford (and a whole host of features by the official supporters club) and another being used as the soundtrack to Manchester City's October goal of the month video on their official website. (www.mcfc.co.uk/citytv/features/2013/november/goals-of-the-month-october). The group have also played a host of packed out shows across the Northwest including a support slot with current Radio One and XFM favourites Catfish and the Bottlemen and stalwarts of the Sheffield scene, Reverend and the Makers as well as their own sold out headline show at Manchester's famous Deaf Institute venue.

'Cupboards Painted Red' will be available to buy on itunes from November 3rd
